City Year South Africa is a non-profit organisation registered with the National Youth Service Unit, a unit set up by the South African Government to promote youth service in the country.
We work to support the growing National Youth Service movement, with a strong belief that youth service is a powerful vehicle for:
• Developing a generation of young leaders for South Africa
• Addressing youth unemployment
• Addressing critical development needs in schools and communities
• Promoting a culture of service across all sectors of society
City Year provides a rigorous year of full-time community service, leadership development and skills training to young South African volunteers (Service Leaders) between the ages of 18 - 25 from all backgrounds.

What do Service Leaders do?
Through this integrated service-learning programme, these Service Leaders tutor and mentor children through an after school programme, engage citizens in the provision of voluntary service through special service days to help meet critical community needs, and work on other issues facing children and communities. At the same time, they participate in training that equips them with the skill to provide quality service, enhances their future prospects, and develops their leadership capacity.
