After School Programme

The After School Programme continues to be the cornerstone of City Year’s Youth Service Programme. In keeping with lessons learnt from the past two years, the programme focuses on support in literacy and life orientation, in accordance with the greatest need.

The After School Programmes are attended by over two thousand primary school pupils. Depending on the particular needs of a school, as well as the competencies of specific teams, adjustments are made from one school's after school programme to the next. For example, one might include the teaching of music as part of life orientation and another dancing.

Positive School Climate Activities

The aim of Positive School Climate Activities is to support local efforts to build stronger communities through partnerships that promote collaboration between community members, community organisations, and schools.

The Positive School Climate Activities also provides a learning platform for Service Leaders to research, design, implement and evaluate a small community development programme while gaining credits in their National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level 5 training.

Each team develops theirProjects as per their capacity, the needs of the learners they interact with daily, as well as the available resources and partners in the community where their school is located.

Signature Service Days

City Year also coordinates Service Days during the couse of the year. These are special one day events involving between 100 and 500 people in physical renovation projects of other NPO's premises, parks and other public spaces.

These Service Days engage CY members, corporate employees, politicians, celebrities and Jo’burgers from all walks of life in fun and hard work that transforms communities!

Heroes Programme

Heroes is a Saturday leadership development, social awareness, and community service programme for grade 9 -11 learners offered by City Year South Africa.  The programme seeks to enhance participants’ awareness of and sensitivity to community issues and to increase their motivation, capacity, and sense of responsibility to take action with others to address these issues. The Heroes Programme aims to develop high school learners into active civic leaders focusing on the values of courage, compassion, cooperation and commitment.  Working in diverse teams, Heroes learn how to lead their peers and other community members to tackle real community issues through community-based service initiatives. Heroes discuss issues, debate ideas, and participate in hands-on activities to better understand how social conditions affect different people and to identify ways that high school-aged youth can be a part of the solution.

The five critical elements of the programme are as follows:

  1. Analysis of Social Issues
  2. Teamwork
  3. Diversity
  4. High Impact Community Service
  5. Leadership Skills Training

Heroes takes place over 16 Saturday’s from April to November.  Modelling the City Year Service Programme, these high school learners, from 10 high schools come together and work in teams of 10-12.
